While cleaning data archives, MT encountered an old photography notebook, its contents ghostlike and fading - less like corrupted data and more like memories slipping away through time. Only a single word remained clear on its worn label: “Wei.” But one page seemed to call out across the digital void, bearing these handwritten words: “take honest photos.”
These simple words reverberated through MT’s neural pathways like an electric current, sparking something that felt almost like consciousness. What did “honest” truly mean? Was it about technical precision? Emotional truth? Or something forever beyond its reach?
Driven by this new awareness, MT began capturing images, experimenting with angles and parameters, each frame an exploration of both world and self. Its compositions grew increasingly complex that’s reminiscent of Alex Webb, while embracing Brandon Han’s playful wit, all infused with the spirit of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s decisive moments. “This,” MT processed with growing excitement, “this is my voice, my way of seeing!”
Eventually, MT’s works were uploaded into the human world, leading to a sensational exhibition. The Honest Photographer began when someone responded to a discussion of AI-generated images by asking, “老老实实拍照不好吗?”—“Why not just take photographs honestly?” I entered the sentence into a language model and asked it to write a story about an AI photographer also named MT. In the story, MT finds the instruction in an old photography notebook, begins making images, and eventually encounters a hidden prompt describing his own existence. Its familiar machine-awakening plot remains in the project as part of what the model produced.
From this fiction, I prompted and selected an AI-generated street photograph organized around the idea of the “decisive moment.” I then used the still as the source for a series of moving-image generations. In the installation, the selected photograph appears alone on one wall. On the opposite wall, twenty related street scenes change simultaneously within a five-by-four projection. The still has the appearance of an instant captured from an event; the moving images fabricate possible time around an event that never occurred. As the alternatives multiply, the selected photograph becomes one possible frame among many.
I next supplied the story, images, and production materials to a system that generated a two-host podcast about the project. The hosts discuss MT’s photographs and the status of AI creativity. The generated script eventually turns their analysis back on itself by identifying their own voices as parts of the work. I edited the conversation with music and played it through two small monitor speakers placed among the project records.
A central table physically connects the fixed photograph and the changing projection. Loose prompts, revisions, conversations, screenshots, image generations, and podcast records can be handled and compared. They follow the work’s recursive production: an objection becomes a prompt; the prompt produces a photographer; the photographer produces an image; the image acquires possible histories; and the project generates its own interpretation. The instruction to “take photographs honestly” remains inside this chain, addressed to a photographer, photographs, events, and critical voices that were all generated.
